TODD BENTLEY’S DOCTRINE: Does it line up with Scripture?
On this point I honestly don’t even know where to start. We have already seen that his doctrine allows him to communicate with and receive special revelation from dead saints. He also claims to communicate regularly with angels.
Bentley’s doctrine and preaching centers heavily on angels, signs and wonders. Indeed, it is almost ALL he talks about. There is no sound scriptural teaching based on clear biblical exegesis or of rightly dividing the Word of Truth. His doctrine is based more on strange spiritual experiences and extra-scriptural revelations then it is from Scripture. Including a female angel named “Emma”, although there is not a single record in Scripture of a female angel.
Bentley is also in the damnable practice of selling the “anointing” and his sermons and materials. And not only this, but he preaches the modern day prosperity gospel which is nothing short of pure heresy. Read his quote taken from one of his teachings on his ministry website:
Todd said: “Not only does God have many angels on assignment, but there is an angelic realm in heaven devoted to finances. Why? It’s because God oversees the wealth of this world and He has certain proven strategies in place. After all, it’s His wealth, no matter whose hands it’s in. His angels are on assignment to watch over your finances, to gather money, to gather investments, to bring favor, and to bring power in your life so that you can have favor and wealth. He wants to provide for you! One of His names is Jehovah Jireh, which means God our provider.
In this regard, on three occasions over the past couple of years I’ve had a visitation from the Lord in which I’ve seen the angel of finance. Every time this happens (in our meetings) there is an incredible financial breakthrough—something is opened up in heaven, it invades the earth, and people respond by giving generously. And afterward many testimonies come in to Fresh Fire reporting the abundant blessings that people have received in return!
So let’s look at what happened in a meeting when I went into a trance-like state and I saw, for the third time over the course of a few years, the angel of finance. [A trance is simply a dream-like state but you are awake. For more information on trances, refer to Acts Chapter 10.] In that trance I experienced one of heaven’s realities and then that experience became a reality here on earth.
Here’s what happened. At first I saw heaven open, and as I ascended a ladder into the heavens I saw full vibrant wings and feathers! These feathers were white and as real as they would be in the natural realm; that’s how vivid it was. Then I noticed wings that moved and there was an arm under one wing and another arm under another wing! As the wings lifted I saw every precious gem you could think of under those wings; and then I saw the angel standing, having a body like a man with six wings. I knew it was the angel of finance.
Next, I saw a door called “treasure” and the door was open. Without thinking or considering what to do, I found myself in a treasure room in heaven. The only item in this room was gold coins, and I began stuffing those coins into my pockets until they were falling out. Then, after filling up another pocket, I opened my trousers and started filling my trousers with gold coins. After that, I stuffed them into my suit jacket. I even opened my shirt and started stuffing gold coins down my shirt!
Still in the trance, I asked the Lord, “What am I doing?” “You’re getting the offering!” He said. Now we weren’t receiving the offering yet in the meeting, but God said that I was getting the offering! Now, we don’t usually, if ever, see it that way, yet God was saying this because the offering, the money, is in heaven. After I heard that answer, I made a conscious decision (in this experience) to get even more gold. Now I was collecting more, stuffing as much as possible anywhere I could fit it, even my ears!
That encounter with the angel of finance, and then the treasure room, is an excellent example of heaven’s realities. And before I share how that reality manifested on earth—in other words, how the offering that was “taken” in heaven manifested on earth in the meeting, you need to know something unique that my associates make a practice of doing.
If an anointed point is made by a minister of the gospel and an associate wants that particular point activated in their life, they will immediately sow into it. By that I mean, they will run up to the pulpit or the altar—“I want that”—and sow into the anointing in that moment of glory, by placing an offering there. Bam! Just whatever is said, they sow into it. Of course they can’t buy the anointing, but on the other hand they can sow into it. (END TODD BENTLEY QUOTE)
Isn’t that what Simon the (ex-) sorcerer tried to do? Didn’t he try to offer Peter a seed-faith gift in exchange for the anointing?
Let’s read it:
“And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money” (Acts 8:18-20).
I find it utterly disgusting to suggest that angels of God come down to give me a bunch of money, while so many poor believers around the world suffer persecution and tribulation and trials and are dirt poor. The Bible speaks no unclear words about those who suppose “gain is godliness” and who serve Mammon. Todd Bentley’s experience and his practice sounds a lot like what the true prophet said –though he claims to be a leader, a prophet, a shepherd of the masses:
“For the leaders of my people-the LORD’S watchmen, his shepherds-are blind to every danger. They are like silent watchdogs that give no warning when danger comes. They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming. And they are as greedy as dogs, never satisfied. They are stupid shepherds, all following their own path, all of them intent on personal gain. “Come,” they say. “We will get some wine and have a party. Let’s all get drunk. Let this go on and on, and tomorrow will be even better.” (Isa. 56:10-12).
That is all these “revivals” are, parties with foolish drunkenness, spiritual drunkenness and slumber.
The common appearance of angels does not prove that something is from God. Satan himself is a fallen ANGEL:
“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” (2 Cor. 11:13-15).
It is no great marvel if angels appear and do many seemingly good things, yet are total counterfeits sent to deceive. Such is the way that Islam, Mormonism, and Jehovah Witness religions ALL started –by the appearance of angels to a major “prophet”. And though Todd may appear to be a “minister of righteousness”, just because he says “in the name of Jesus” every now and then doesn’t mean he is of God! Which “Jesus’” name is He invoking anyway? There are many Jesus’s in the world. He is just as much a false prophet as Joseph Smith and Muhammad because his life and doctrines contradicts the Word of God. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!
“For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him”. (2 Cor. 11:4).
From fairy-tale-like spiritual experiences and “third heaven visitations”, to selling the “anointing”, to refusing to preach and expound on repentance and holiness of life, the doctrine of Todd Bentley seems to be nothing short of a doctrine of demons. And we’ve only scratched the surface. We could go much more in depth, but time and space fails us.
